Romania Uses Blockchain Solution In General Election For Transparency
Romania conducted its national election yesterday, 6 December 2020, and the country adopted blockchain technology to boost the transparency and traceability of the electoral process.
The blockchain solution was implemented into Romania’s IT systems and applications used in the parliamentary elections as a complementary solution to guarantee the IT systems’ integrity.
Increasing Voters Confidence
Using blockchain ensures that no one, including the administrators, can alter or modify the data recorded during the election.
The application was proposed and developed by Special Telecommunications Service (STS) as part of an effort to “increase the resilience of the Romanian electoral system and the confidence of voters and electoral competitors in the integrity of data and information” collected in the elections.
The Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) used the blockchain solution to monitor voter turnout and statistical data in real-time through fingerprints, with the information being provably fair. This ensures that the data collected are not tampered with at any time as they are publicly available for anyone to access at https://voting.roaep.ro.
According to the STS, using the solution helps “create unique and unrepeatable digital fingerprints which are updated every five seconds. A possible change in the information generates a new fingerprint, making the change visible.”
The platform for viewing the blockchain data allows the public to see the lists of last blocks, a data graph loading the blocks, and a snapshot of the information in the buffer zone before being closed in a block.
The public can also view the details of a block and the list of transactions included in it, details of a transaction, and maps presenting the activity in real-time.
Although the solution adopted by the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) is not the same as blockchain voting, it is only an additional solution to ensure transparency. However, it is the right step towards the wide adoption of blockchain technology in electoral processes.
